    Kaba ornaments workshop

    A unique opportunity to work with the legendary Kaba ornaments that were designed by the late Bram de Does (1934–2015). During a 2-day course, you will be working under the professional guidance of Thomas Gravemaker and Marina Chaccur. After brief introduction to the history of ornaments – in particular Bram de Does’s Kaba – and the use of them, all participants will have their own set of Kaba ornaments at their disposal with which they will be creating their individual patterns and compositions. These will then be hand printed by the participants on a 1960s Korrex test press using quality handmade papers. Date: 12-13 March 2016, 10:00-17:00 hrs. Location: LetterpressAmsterdam, Singel 214, 1016AB Amsterdam. Cost: 250 € (Materials, coffee, tea and lunch are included). To apply please send an e-mail to: [email protected] Thomas Gravemaker, who has extensive experience and knowledge in letterpress and graphic design, worked for many years in the UK and in France, as manager in a design group, before setting up his own studio. His passion for letterpress began prior to his training at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and has developed over the years. During these years, he has worked on private commissions, taught letterpress, lectured and talked at various conferences and events (http://letterpressamsterdam.com) . Marina Chaccur, Brazilian designer based in the Netherlands, is passionate about type ornaments, which was the subject of her MA degree in London. The Kaba ornament holds a special place in her heart since she first laid eyes on one of Bram’s books about them.     Lettering for (greeting) cards with Marina Chaccur Want to say “Thank You”, “I Love you” (Valentine’s Day will be a few days later) or something else to someone? In one afternoon you will learn how to design a nice lettering for your message, how to use basic tools for great results and how to refine your drawing. Already have something in mind?     Hand Lettering Workshop in Den Haag

    Drawing Words, a (hand) lettering workshop taught by Marina Chaccur. For over 3 years Marina has been teaching this hand lettering workshop in South America with great success. In one day you will learn the differences between calligraphy, lettering and type; how to use basic tools for great results; sketch techniques and how to refine your drawing. Madrid’s type festival fills the city’s agenda with two months of events and activities with this year’s theme «Testimonies»: what’s behind typeface design. Four venues, two days of conferences, three exhibitions, four workshops, three type safaris and much more. It’s the one and only typography festival in Madrid. Typomad is the key to spreading typographic culture in our city and supporting the design scene, creating a living space for professionals, students and enthusiasts. Typomad is a participatory event, we organize an international open call for experimental posters and also a national open call for young projects for our conferences.

    This workshop aims to provide an opportunity for designers to explore in detail the process of typeface production. It comprises of lectures pertaining to the history of typefaces, demos on practical and technical skills, and one- to-one guidance by tutors Peter Brugger and Onur Yazıcıgil. It invites beginner level designers to explore the principles of type production, and intermediate to advanced designers to work on existing projects to further develop their typefaces for industry standards. The workshop will focus on two broad categories: Display Typefaces and Text Typefaces. Among these, various sub-categories will be discussed and each attendee will work on their preferred category and style of typeface.     28th Tipo Brda Summer Type Design Workshop

    This summer, the Tipo Brda Summer Type Design Workshop is hosting two type designers based in Netherlands: Diana Ovezea and Barbara Bigosińska, who earned their masters in type design at t]m KABK in 2013. The workshop will set off with the exploration of different methods of sketching type and usage of the tools. Further on, the participants will continue building a concept for a typeface or type family. For the rest of the week, each participant will work on their individual typeface in a digital environment. Lectures ways to sketch type, getting ideas for type process of making a typeface based on their experiences drawing good vectors spacing and kerning Mentors prof. Lucijan Bratuš, (ALUO); assist. prof. Domen Fras, (NTF) will assist with one to one tutorials. Who can participate? Students of graphic design, typography, architecture and all other people interested in designing typefaces. Expectations: At least some basic experience with creation of type. A laptop is required, we all use application Glyphs, therefore we suggest mac. However, if you work with any other software this is not an obstacle. You are welcome with your own ideas and sketches of type you want to work on. Tools needed – black fineliners, black markers, pencils, white-out, ruller, a sketchbook. The workshop crew will provide transparent paper and other basic stationery.
