Marin Independent Journal Headline Font circa 1960

Featured Replies

Hi all,
1st post. Hoping to identify this typeface, used in an article headline by our local northern California newspaper back in 1960.  I especially love the sharp spur on the 'h', 't', and 'n'... and that lowercase 'f' is pure elegance. It may be italicized, or just a bad microfiche copy. Given the date, this would've likely been an offset typeface available in multiple sizes, or something offered through Linotype.

The MyFonts tool couldn't nail it down, but I'm hoping folks here might recognize it.
Thanks in advance, and happy holidays.

Hey Kevin,

I was all set to question your answer based on your seemingly erroneous link... but nope, you're spot on! Ludlow Tempo Medium Italic is it. It's wonderful. Thanks so much!

Yes, sorry, you can’t link to Daylight Fonts’ subpages, I can only get you to the landing page and hope you can figure out the navigation beneath the images.

You have to do some work, after all.

I really wish someone would revive Tempo in all its weights and glory....

Hadn't been to the Daylight site before and didn't spot those subtle sub-links. What a great resource. I've never created a new typeface or revived an old one, but Tempo certainly seems like a worthy contender. Perhaps I'll sit down one of these days with an old specimen book and see if I can breathe some pixels into the old, dried ink. Thanks again for the lead.
