I've tried most of the font id websites and have came up short so I'm hoping a human can help me ID the font used for the Folklore Center in NYC back in the 60's.

It might just be painted by a sign-painter. Are there print uses as well? Otherwise it might not be based on a named font. 

I didn't even think of that. I bet you are correct. All the printed material I've seen is different.

I agree it's probably painted, but inspired by some version of Bodoni. Bodoni URW (bold and horizontally scaled) looks promising.

Might be a condensed weight of Modern No. 20.

Moderno Extra Condensed Bold is quite similar.
