Looking for help identifying a font from an anonymous letter (1988)

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone! I’m new to the forum and I need some help. I’ve spent several months searching for this font, but I just can’t find it. Identifying it is very important, as it could provide further informations about an anonymous missive connected to a major criminal case. The note, which contained these two small letters, arrived in Italy in 1988. It’s not clear whether the two are actually connected or if they were simply placed together by cutting and pasting. I cannot provide additional images of the missive, but I can tell you that all the other letters were taken from an Italian weekly magazine published between 1987 and 1988. These two small letters, however, cannot be found in any issue of that magazine. I therefore have no useful information regarding their origin. The “l” measures about 2 cm and the “a” about 1.6 cm. As far as we know, they could have come from Italy, but possibly also from America. Many thanks to anyone who can help me identify the font — or, even better, determine where these two letters were originally taken from.

This is the only letter 'a' that looks quite similar, but unfortunately it isn’t the same. It was taken from a 1920s brochure. It might have nothing to do with the one I’m trying to find, but it’s still the only one that resembles it.

Might it be an inverted 'e', rather than an 'a' ?

Thank you for your response MarcusW, but the small “tail” in the lower right indicates that it is the letter “a,” not an inverted “e.”
