Help: 19th century style of writing abbreviations on maps

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have a bit of a query I hoping someone here could help me with.

Is there a way to digitally replicate abbreviations written in this style as used by the Ordnance Survey on their six-inch maps from the 19th century?

In each abbreviation the last letter appears to be superscript with a full stop directly beneath it; but some are inline with the top of the ascender, some not; and the full stop is the same point size as the preceding text.

I've included several examples above, taken from maps available here.

I have seen this style replicated digitally here > "Railway Map of Greater London (2021)" by Mike Hall.

Is there a keyboard command or Unicode character to replicate this way of writing abbreviations?

Any help appreciated 🙂

In which environment would you want to use it?

I am not aware of a way to replicate that in Unicode. As unique code points it doesn’t exist and constructing it out of two characters would get pretty messy and inconsistent.

A good way to go would be to just create a custom version of an Open Source font and add those characters.

In the short-term, you could also type the full stop, then the letter, and negative kern the letter to a position over the full stop. Once you figure out the correct amount for the kerning, you could then create a character style for that superscripted letter that would apply the kerning and superscripting in one shot.

Of course, you'd need a custom character style for each type size/style you are using....
