Name of an old French punctuation mark •—•?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I once read about a historic punctuation mark used in France that consisted of a long bar with two balls or other shapes on either end. Something like this: •—• Can anyone help me remember its name or where I might have encountered this?

(I have a vague memory that this appeared in an old book in digital form on BnF Gallica, and that it gave a fanciful account of its origins — something to do with scepters and beehives.)

Thanks for humoring the request!
