In fact, there are subtle differences between the three, but does anyone know what the justification for each one is?) Sorry to reply to myself, but on further inspection, I should amend this. All three Nimbus Roman types appear to be based on Linotype Times Roman. Some interesting differences between the three, however: No9 L is almost imperceptibly lighter than the other two but in different ways: No9 seems to have fractionally darker vertical strokes, whereas No4 has fractionally darker horizontals. No9 has italicized Greek characters, whereas both No9L and No4 have regular ones. (No9L also supports only those Greek characters appearing in the Latin-1 charset, whereas the other two have more.) I believe No4 has a very (very) slightly lower caps height than the other two. As far as "A030" and "Nimbus Sans L", the latter supports Cyrillic while the former does not. They otherwise seem largely identical, although I haven't done a rigorous inspection. I apologize if all this seems pedantic but I haven't been able to find much other information on the lineage of these various faces (esp. Nimbus Roman). Wikipedia isn't very informative, and Google mostly seems to have download links rather than background. Link to comment

A028 looks like the images I have seen of Albertus, but the 'M' is deeper. A030... Nimbus Mono with some Arial slathered on? The closest match I have ever found to Garamond No8 is Bitstream's "Original Garamond BT", and both look similar to Stempel Garamond. Member Pab… Posted November 29, 2012 Share Posted November 29, 2012 Renaissance Man: We have used GPOS based kerning, instead of the old Kerning table. So the 'kern' table is no longer present. All the kerning pairs are contained only into the 'kern' OT feature. This method is better for web-fonts since you get a smaller file size, and the font will load faster on the web. I usually find myself wanting to add a "few" characters that I'd really, really like to use but are not provided. (I make use of unusual punctuation marks, and fractions, and long S, and computing/astronomy symbols, and smiles/dingbats/emoji, etc.) I've had occasions when I had to change my plans because a font didn't have the repertoire I needed. My only two released fonts are under Open Font License. I've contributed a few glyphs to EB Garamond, another open source typeface. Link to comment

Member gar… Posted January 27, 2013 Share Posted January 27, 2013 Regarding Aller as a webfont, Dalton Maag considers 1 desktop user to be the equivalent of 1,000 unique website visitors per day, with some wiggle room for traffic spikes.http://www.daltonmaag.com/about/web_embedding_faq.html But, more to the point of this thread, Aller is not an open source font; it's covered by Dalton Maag's standard EULA (supplemented with the Aller Free License), which does not allow modification. The Ubuntu font is covered by its own open source license which is based on the SIL OFL. Link to comment
