Looking for the 1993 United Airlines "Worldwide Service" logo

I'm looking for the United Airlines "Worldwide Service" logo painted on the nose of each aircraft from 1993-2004 on the "Battleship Grey" livery designed by CKS Partners. I've tried 3 different font matching websites and have been unable to come up with anything. I thought it might be a Bodoni variant because that's what they used for the UNITED AIRLINES titles on the fuselage, but the W doesn't match.

Sorry, but the closest I can find is a Bodoni—Bauer Bodoni Italic, to be exact.

Your sample is a bit more condensed and lower contrast (lower contrast between the thick and thin strokes), and some serifs seem to have been squared off (r, w, v),

Pentagram did the original rebrand in the mid-1990s—I suspect they commissioned someone to create a custom version of Bauer Bodoni to make it more visually sturdy across all media—like this wordmark on the planes themselves.

  • very interesting! 1
