Desard
Hi guys, i recently bought an old hand plane and i am currently tying to determine age and origin. There are three letters carved into the plane. Can someone identify the font / age? The hand plane is probably from europe. I saw similar dutch planes from the 18th century, but some people think it could be older. I have no clue about fonts, but i found the "Bastarda" which dates back to the 14th -15th centuries in france, netherlands and germany. Link to comment
Solution Ralf Herrmann Posted December 6, 2021 Solution Share Posted December 6, 2021 Not sure why the image seems to be mirrored. So let me post it like I think it needs to look: A matching font (with the letters I/J, H, S) download at MyFonts 1 Link to comment
Desard
Wow, that was fast. Thanks! 🙂 I just double checked, my image is correct. So the carving is mirrored? That's weird Link to comment

That's weird … and it might mean the lettering is fake and a later addition. I am also surprised it matches a print font so well. That is not expected for old product lettering. Link to comment
Desard
You are right, the similarity is astounding. Do you think it could be added in the last couple of decades? Because i am pretty sure it has not been touched for the last 100-150 years at least. 1 Link to comment
Riccardo Sartori
For what is worth, this particular typeface doesn’t seem to be older than 1974. Link to comment
