similar font to this neon 1948 Victoria Theater marquee?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm looking for a typeface similar to the custom sign for this 1948 neon at the Victoria Theater in Times Square. Photograph by Sam Falk. Looking for something similar to the "JOAN OF ARC / INGRID BERGMAN" writing. I'm having trouble finding a font that is blocky (like, the volume on the right side of the "A" is the same as the left), with delicate NON SLAB serifs. Looking to recreate something like this for a personal project and would prefer a free typeface 🙂

Cheers!

The obvious reference would be Copperplate (or perhaps Serif) Gothic.

I don’t know of any free version, but you can find cheap options in this kind of style.

To add to Riccardo’s excellent suggestions for similar typefaces:

OL Signpainter

Agora

Flange

Memo

Among freemium faces, Evil Dead might work for you (but it might be too goth).
