rtgbanks Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 This topic was imported from the Typophile platform Can anyone tell me the law of digitalising typefaces found in old Letraset books. Who actually owns the license? Thanks in advance.
James Arboghast Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 The best place to ask these questions is athttp://www.letraset.com/ Typophilers (who are not Letraset's legal representatives) advising on this stuff would in effect be "lawyering". Questions about the intellectual property or copyright of particular works are best directed to the owner(s) of those works. j a m e s
dberlowgone Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 "Can anyone tell me the law of digitalising typefaces found in old Letraset books." There is no legal constraint on digitalizing typefaces found in printed books of any kind or age, and no licensing is required. Cheers!
dberlowgone Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 (sorry, I ran out of ink for a second)....and no licensing is required, unless you wish to use a trademarked font name. Cheers!
rtgbanks Posted March 26, 2009 Author Posted March 26, 2009 Thanks dberlow. I'll pose another question. Say I wanted to make a stenciled version of Univers and want to sell it. Is that illegal? Thanks again.
Si_Daniels Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Yay! Let me grab my rod and tackle box - I love a good fishing trip!
rtgbanks Posted March 26, 2009 Author Posted March 26, 2009 Hmm...Don't get that sii. Also, different cuts of fonts...How is this legal? There are so many cuts of Clarendon and Avant Garde for example.
Si_Daniels Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Sorry - defined here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing_expedition "The metaphor likens this to a fishing trip where, if one casts a wide enough net, they are bound to score something" I guess it's not funny when you have to explain it.
Si_Daniels Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 ...well anyway - everything you need to know on the subject is distilled here... http://www.emigre.com/Editorial.php?sect=2 Enjoy! Si
