Si_Daniels Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 This topic was imported from the Typophile platform http://www.impactmontreal.com/en/ Unique, or are there others?
Birdseeding Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I can think of a bunch of cities named after typefaces, that in turn have sports teams (Alemannia Aachen, that sort of thing), but I suspect that's cheating. So I'm digging through lists, and the one I've found so far is a team from Macau named after Stephenson Blake's Windsor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windsor_Arch_Ka_I
eliason Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I can never remember: were the Cleveland Browns named after Shinntype's font? or was it Lineto's?
Nick Shinn Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Dynamo (Kiev/Houston). Galaxy (no Polaris). And in the collective noun category: Jazz.
Ryan Maelhorn Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I mean, is it really fair to say those teams were named after fonts? Those words are associated with other things besides fonts. Now, if we could find one named Helvetica...
Andreas Stötzner Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 One day I will buy the Dallas Mavericks and rebrand them as Andron Majuscles. Sounds more manly and sportive anyway.
Nick Shinn Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Think of all the punning opportunities for sports commentators. That would be fontastic.
Té Rowan Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 There is a scripty blackletter named Bayern out there, so I guess that covers B. Leverkusen and B. München. Anyone's up to naming a face Eintracht to give Frankfurt some coverage? Add.l: Detroit (Pistons)
Don McCahill Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 > I can think of a bunch of cities named after typefaces, that in turn have sports teams (Alemannia Aachen, that sort of thing), but I suspect that's cheating. Uhm, I think it is the other way around. They typefaces are named after the cities.
Té Rowan Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 There are at least three different faces named Maverick, so the Dallas team has a choice.
Joe Pemberton Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Helvetica is named for Switzerland. (Sacramento was almost named New Helvetia.)
