hrant Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 > This statement is offensive to every south-american person. Not to the ones who fight for their culture. Look at the winners of the last Morisawa awards. And don't talk to me about mantras. "There's no essential difference..." Sheesh. If it weren't a religion, it would be a joke. -- I do apologize for thinking that this thread would be boring. But I can't apologize for my feelings of boredom when I look at formulaic design, and for expressing those emotions. I do try to keep my emotions in check however, and I would ask that you try to do the same. The only saving grace is that any type id for a government probably can't escape being formulaic, so I guess the brief was followed very well, and that's the primary goal of any good designer. So maybe my complaint can be seen in that light. hhp
hrant Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Bert, I've been meaning to reply to your post with a great quote that was in the back of my mind, but had trouble tracking it down: "The true teacher defends his pupils against his own personal influence. He inspires self-distrust. He guides their eyes from himself to the spirit that quickens him. He will have no disciple." - Amos Bronson Alcott I try hard to be like this when I teach, but of course have no idea whether I even come close. As I've said before, the subjugation of individual judgment and expression is the seemingly inescapable dark side of formal education. hhp
Bert Vanderveen Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Thanks for that quote, Hrant! Luckily I had a few of those teachers in my time… ; ) . . . Bert Vanderveen BNO
hrant Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 I rediscovered this thread thanks to a new one*, and wanted to show something by Verheul that I found about since:http://www.flickr.com/photos/typojo/4518419388/ To me that one glyph is worth more than the entire Rijksoverheid font project. * https://typography.guru/forums/topic/112928-forwarding Related: http://typographica.org/typeface-reviews/quintet/ hhp
